GeoAcademy System Administration College

Cybersecurity & Compliance Department

The Cybersecurity & Compliance Department trains security specialists able to take responsibility for data security and regulatory compliance across research infrastructure. Students complete projects in zero-trust network architecture (ZTNA) design, PKI/certificate management, SIEM-based threat detection with ELK and Wazuh, and applying ISO 27001/GDPR compliance frameworks. Graduates head into the workforce having already lived through the full security cycle as project work — access-control policy design, threat detection and response, and regulatory audit readiness.

🧑‍🔬
🔑
1915–1990
Horst Feistel
Researcher
💡 Invented the Feistel network (1970s at IBM), the block-cipher structure underlying DES and dozens of later ciphers
🧑‍🔬
🔑
1890–1960
Gilbert Vernam
Researcher
💡 Invented the Vernam cipher (1917), an additive stream cipher that, combined with a truly random non-reused key, is the one-time pad — the only cipher proven to have perfect secrecy
🧑‍🔬
🔑
1952–2006
Hans Dobbertin
Researcher
💡 Broke the compression function of MD4/MD5 and co-designed the strengthened RIPEMD-160 hash function, foundational work for certificate fingerprinting and message-integrity checking
🧑‍🔬
🔑
1924–1997
James H. Ellis
Researcher
💡 Originated the concept of 'non-secret encryption' at GCHQ in 1970 — the theoretical seed that grew into public-key cryptography and modern certificate-based PKI trust systems
Marian Rejewski🔑
1905–1980
Marian Rejewski
Researcher
💡 Reconstructed the wiring of the German military Enigma cipher machine using permutation-group mathematics (1932), founding modern systematic cryptanalysis
🧑‍🔬
🔑
Norman Hardy
Researcher
💡 Co-created the GNOSIS/KeyKOS capability-based operating systems and identified/named the 'confused deputy problem' (1988), a foundational access-control vulnerability class
🧑‍🔬
🔑
1944–2016
Stephen T. Walker
Researcher
💡 Led the DoD Computer Security Initiative that produced the Trusted Computer System Evaluation Criteria ('Orange Book'), and founded Trusted Information Systems, developer of one of the earliest commercial firewall toolkits
🧑‍🔬
🔑
Paul A. Karger
Researcher
💡 Co-authored the 1974 Multics Security Evaluation (with Roger Schell), one of the first formal penetration tests of an operating system, cataloguing trap doors, covert channels, and kernel design flaws
🧑‍🔬
🔑
1930–2007
James P. Anderson
Researcher
💡 Introduced the reference monitor concept (1972) and formulated audit-trail-based statistical intrusion detection (1980), foundational to modern SIEM and IDS platforms
🧑‍🔬
🔑
1920–2013
Willis H. Ware
Researcher
💡 Chaired the 1970 RAND 'Ware Report' establishing systematic computer-security risk assessment and organized 'tiger team' adversarial testing methodology
🧑‍🔬
🔑
1929–2013
Alan F. Westin
Researcher
💡 Authored 'Privacy and Freedom' (1967) and helped formulate the Fair Information Practice Principles that directly shaped the US Privacy Act of 1974 and, decades later, the EU GDPR
Donn B. Parker🔑
1929–2021
Donn B. Parker
Researcher
💡 Pioneered empirical computer-crime research (Crime by Computer, 1976) and developed the information-security governance framework in Fighting Computer Crime (1998), foundational to modern ISMS/ISO 27001 practice
🧑‍🔬
