Energy Economics & Market Analysis Department

The Energy Economics & Market Analysis Department trains students to quantitatively assess energy markets and the economic viability of geoenergy projects. Students build systematic proficiency in NPV/IRR analysis, LCOE calculation, Hotelling's-rule-based resource valuation, and market modeling, applying these methods to exploration, production, and energy-transition investment cases — graduating as practitioners who can see a cost-benefit analysis and economic feasibility assessment through to completion on a real project, unassisted.

Researcher
💡 Founded modern capital budgeting theory, establishing discounted cash-flow methods (NPV, IRR) as the standard for evaluating long-lived investment projects
Irving Fisher🔑
1867–1947
Irving Fisher
Researcher
💡 Founded modern interest-rate theory and the intertemporal theory of capital and investment underlying all discounted valuation
Lewis Cecil Gray🔑
1881–1952
Lewis Cecil Gray
