Researchers Kim Seokhan and Roh Heechan Depart for Long-Term Dispatch to NTNU, Norway

[Trondheim=GeoVis] Kim Seokhan and Roh Heechan, master's student researchers from the Computational Geophysics Lab of Jeonbuk National University (JBCGL), announced their departure for Trondheim to conduct collaborative research with the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU).

The two researchers will conduct dispatch research at NTNU for approximately three months, from June 19 to September 16, 2022. This dispatch was promoted as part of the National Research Foundation of Korea's 2022 Korea-Nordic Special Cooperation Project.

At NTNU, they will conduct collaborative research with Professor Alexey Stovas, a world-renowned authority in petroleum engineering. Professor Stovas is a top expert in seismic anisotropy and full-waveform inversion, and has gained a high reputation in the international academic community.

The core topic of this dispatch research is demonstration research on 4D seismic monitoring of the Sleipner CCS project. The Sleipner project is the world's largest carbon storage project underway in the Norwegian North Sea, and it is a commercial CCS project that has been operating since 1996.

4D seismic monitoring is a key technology for tracking changes in underground reservoirs over time, and it is essential for ensuring the safety and efficiency of CCS projects. Kim Seokhan and Roh Heechan will conduct research to improve the accuracy of monitoring technology using actual CCS field data.

NTNU is a leading engineering university in Norway, with world-class research capabilities, particularly in petroleum engineering and marine engineering. It provides a practical research environment based on its rich experience and data accumulated in North Sea oil field development and CCS technology.

During their dispatch, the two researchers plan to analyze actual monitoring data from the Sleipner project using NTNU's advanced research facilities and develop new interpretation techniques. They also plan to establish international research cooperation by networking with CCS-related institutions in Norway.

Professor Ju-Won Oh stated, "It is very meaningful that Kim Seokhan and Roh Heechan are conducting demonstration research at NTNU, which possesses world-class CCS technology." He added, "We expect the experience gained through this dispatch to greatly contribute to the development of domestic CCS technology."
