Geophysics Computing Lab Selected for First Research Project
[Jeonju=GeoVis] The Geophysics Computing Lab at Jeonbuk National University announced on the 28th that it has been selected for the National Research Foundation of Korea's First Research Project.
The selected project is titled 'Development of Parallel Processing Algorithms for Seismic Survey Data Considering Triclinic Anisotropy', and it will receive a total of 90 million won in research funding over three years, from September 1, 2017, to August 31, 2020.
The First Research Project is a program operated by the National Research Foundation of Korea to strengthen the independent research capabilities of new researchers, targeting researchers who have obtained their doctoral degrees within seven years.
This research focuses on developing seismic data processing techniques that accurately consider the triclinic anisotropy found in complex subsurface structures. In particular, the development of parallel processing algorithms for efficient processing of large-volume seismic data is a key objective.
Triclinic anisotropy is the most common form of anisotropy in subsurface rocks, and data processing techniques that accurately account for it are essential for precise subsurface imaging. However, due to high computational complexity, simplified anisotropic models have primarily been used in the past.
A lab official stated, "Through the selection of the First Research Project, we have gained an opportunity to realize original research ideas." They added, "We will develop practical anisotropic seismic processing technology through high-performance parallel processing techniques."
