Master's Student Yunha Jung Participates in Fieldwork at Utah Geothermal Site

[Utah=GeoVis] Yunha Jung, a master's student at the Geophysics Computing Lab of Jeonbuk National University, announced on the 5th that she participated in fieldwork at a geothermal site in Utah with researchers from Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL).

From February 4th to February 10th, 2024, for 7 days, Jung installed sensors for seismic detection at the Cape Modern site in Utah. Four doctoral students from Texas A&M University and the University of Utah also participated in this work.

The research team installed sensors near six boreholes and additionally deployed 500 geophones at 250 locations throughout the site to collect seismic data. After checking the functionality of the installed sensors, data collection began.

This fieldwork was conducted as part of LBNL's MEQ project to monitor simulation tests within the geothermal site. The collected seismic data will be used as important material to characterize the location of geothermal stimulation in the future.

Jung stated, "This fieldwork was very meaningful as I was able to directly experience the process of installing sensors and collecting data at a real geothermal site." She added, "I hope the collected data will contribute to the advancement of geothermal energy research."
