Jeonbuk National University Geophysics Computing Lab Selected for Korea-Nordic Special Cooperation Project by National Research Foundation of Korea

[Jeonju=GeoVis] The Computational Geophysics Lab of Jeonbuk National University (JBCGL) announced that it has been selected for the 2022 Korea-Nordic Special Cooperation Project organized by the National Research Foundation of Korea.

The selected project, titled 'Development of 4D Time-Lapse Seismic Monitoring Technology Considering Seismic Anisotropy', will be carried out for one year, from January 1, 2022, to December 31, 2022. A total of 20 million won in research funding will be provided for this project.

The Korea-Nordic Special Cooperation Project is an international cooperation program aimed at expanding scientific and technological exchanges between Korea and Nordic countries and creating tangible joint research results. In particular, it selects and supports excellent research topics in areas of strength for both regions, such as energy, environment, and ICT.

In this project, international collaborative research will be conducted with Professor Alexey Stovas of the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU). Professor Stovas is a world-renowned authority in seismic anisotropy, with numerous research achievements in petroleum exploration and geophysics.

Researchers including Professor Ju-Won Oh, and master's students Kim Seokhan and Roh Heechan will participate in the research team. Through cooperation with NTNU, they plan to develop new techniques that accurately consider the effects of anisotropic media in 4D time-lapse seismic monitoring technology.

4D seismic monitoring technology is a key technology for tracking changes in underground reservoirs over time, and it plays an important role, especially in carbon capture and storage (CCS) projects and oil and gas development. By reflecting the anisotropic characteristics of underground media that were not considered in existing technologies, it is expected to significantly improve monitoring accuracy.

Professor Ju-Won Oh stated, "I am very pleased to conduct joint research with world-class researchers through this Korea-Nordic cooperation project." He added, "I will contribute to enhancing the international competitiveness of domestic geophysical exploration technology through the development of seismic anisotropy technology."
