Geophysics Computing Lab Participates in COβ Geological Storage Induced Seismicity Research Service
[Jeonju=GeoVis] The Geophysics Computing Lab at Jeonbuk National University announced on the 28th that it will participate in the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy's service for 'Research on the Record of Induced Seismicity Cases in COβ Geological Storage Projects'.
The research period is approximately 4 months, from November 30, 2018, to March 30, 2019, and will receive a total of 80 million won in research funding.
This research aims to systematically investigate and analyze cases of induced seismicity that have occurred in COβ geological storage projects worldwide. In particular, it will contribute to establishing safety assessment standards for future domestic CCS projects by identifying the correlation between injection volume, injection pressure, geological characteristics, and the occurrence of induced seismicity.
COβ geological storage technology is a key technology for achieving carbon neutrality, but the possibility of induced seismicity due to the reactivation of existing faults or the creation of new fractures during high-pressure COβ injection has been continuously raised.
The research team plans to develop induced seismicity occurrence mechanisms and prediction models by comprehensively analyzing seismic monitoring data and operational data from major CCS demonstration sites worldwide.
A lab official stated, "Through this research, we will establish seismic risk assessment techniques necessary for the development of domestic CCS technology." They added, "We will contribute to the implementation of safe and reliable COβ geological storage technology."
